You're building what?!?
Some have thought I'm a bit off my rocker to go building an airplane ...
especially one that looks as futuristic as the Cozy.
Am I nuts? I don't think so. In fact, I am considered by many to be
obsessive in doing my howework and research before spending a large amount
of money or time on anything. The fact is that building your own aircraft
gives you a much greater understanding of the airplane than what most pilots
who buy Cessnas, Pipers, and Mooneys will ever have; especially since the
FAA doesn't want the pilot who's not an A&P working on it (I could rant
on that subject alone for hours).
So why did I choose a Cozy? A number of reasons...
- Safe
- Sporty
- Fast (200 Mph)
- 4-Seats
- Relatively inexpensive
Frankly, I want what every pilot wants. The problem with a certificated
aircraft is that any that will match the above criteria (excluding the part
about being inexpensive) goes for more than $100K. Sorry, but I just
mortgaged my life away, and I won't have that amount of money any time soon.
Since I like to work with my hands, enjoy creating new things, and the new
house has a 25x19 carport (which I intend to enclose and insulate as the
project progresses and it starts to require more space), it seems
to me that it's time to start building!
Family Involvement
I am fortunate. Susan not only approves of this decision, but she has
promised to help with the construction (Sorry guys,
she's taken and her two sisters are married). I am sure that my Greyhound
"Ebony" and Susan's cat "Xena" will also be helpful in the construction of the
ship :-)
